ROCK CLIMBING. THE VERTICAL DIMENSION
Climbing is maybe the most powerful medium for personal growth in the world of outdoor adventure creating many opportunites to access latent talents and realise hidden potential. Emphasizing the principals of relaxation, slow balanced movement, suppleness, concentration and breathwork and focusing with clarity and intention in demanding situations, you will learn to move smoothly and gracefully over the rock.
Northern NM is blessed with some amazingly diverse rock climbs, some of our choises include the red basalt cliffs of the Rio Grande gorge...we sometimes see hot air ballons descending to touch the river before flying away again... The huge granite boulders of Tres Piedras in the Carson National Forest and the quite unique "pebble cliffs" of El Rito to the south. Our climbing day, as well as being adventureous and challenging will also teach you basic rock craft,ie tying knots, belaying, equipment and safety proceedures. Taos Mountain Skills Rockclimbing School will be our guides.
 THE WILDERNESS
EXPERIENCE
High above Taos is the Wheeler peak wilderness area,the Peak is over 13,000 ft, a high alpine environment of pine forests, hiking trails, rivers and lakes. Starting at Taos ski valley village and ascending to Williams Lake, we will explore this remote and spectacular landscape, a huge natural ampitheatre with waterfalls, forests and meadows, wild flowers and wild animals!!!!! It is home to mule deer, elk, marmots, black bear, hawks, eagles and the occasional mountain lion. As well as the physical challenge of alpine travel, we will study the eco-systems of the region, learning to "tread lightly and leave no trace," you will gain a conscious appreciation for the pristine environment, witnessing nature in all it's abundance. Tuning into the gentle rhythms of nature, you will absorb the healing and restoring powers of this land while learning to respect the elemental forces that can be unleashed. This is mountain territory, thunder and lighting, torrential downpours as well as exposure to the high altitude sun can all be objective hazards. Good judgement, teamwork, planning and preparation are all essential aspects of mountain life. The mountains can be incredible sources of energy and inspiration, if we allow ourselves to open to new perpectives and change, nature can be our gracious guide, showing us the divine order, unity and connectedness of all life, filling us with a sense of joy and wonder and resolving some of the mysteries of our life's journey.
THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
This is a day of diversity, exploration, cultural awakening and...fun...Taos is almost unique in its diversity of cultures, architecture, artists, alternative communities and colorful history.
We will visit the Taos pueblo, home to the Tiwa indians, the longest continually inhabited pueblo in the US. The Plaza, a landmark for the Spanish settlers since 1600?? The St Francis de Asis (Fransisco) church, made entirely from adobe mud bricks.
The Greater World Earthship community, a unique settlement of homes built into the earth, constructed from recycled materials and powered by solar energy. The Neem Karoli Baba Ashram, a Hindu temple dedicated to Hanuman, the "monkey god" of service...the only one in the US...
You will learn how religious and cultural differences between the native indians, the Hispanics and the white settlers have, over the passage of time, made way for tolerence and understanding to establish the prosperous, creative and vibrant community that is Taos, NM.
Learning to live in harmony and balance not just with nature, but also our fellow man is key to peace and unity within ourselves and our communties. This cultural "voyage of discovery" will provide deep insights into our own tolerences and prejudises, how we view, and judge, different religions, cultural practises and traditions. How we use the earths resources, questioning whether our present lifestyles are sustainable, whether some of our new "technologies" are "friend or foe." Being immersed in a highly creative community like Taos, does it inspire and bring forth our own creative impulses, awakening latent talents and potentials when living within a higher consciousness environment. This is both the magic and the mystery of this Enchanted land. It will change your life!
